If I don’t already sound like a broken record, rest assure: I’m going to. Real soon. But I’m okay with that because it’s worth restating that, yes, eating right and exercising are big parts of losing weight, but there are other things you need to consider. A big one of these is toxins. Toxins are dangerous little buggers. They pop up everywhere and they’re tough to get rid of. Think of them like that one passive-aggressive relative you can’t seem to avoid; annoyingly present and really into not letting you forget about the fat that you’re working really hard to get rid of. “But, but, but I don’t ingest toxins! I don’t eat fast food! I don’t smoke! I am very responsible with my drinking!” Well, that’s great! But what if I told you that those were just the tip of the toxic iceberg? Would I be bumming you out? Probably. Would that change the reality of the situation? Nah. So why did I ask? Sadism! But do not be saddened, my friends, for we have the tools to fight back against toxins.
Now STOP: SCIENCE TIME. Maybe you heard in your crazy college days that shotgunning those beers and knocking back all that tequila would take a toll on you and, more specifically, on your liver. Yes, your liver. Where toxins are filtered. See where I’m going here? Our lovely and hard-working livers have evolved over time to break down toxins and excrete them by means of two phase detoxification pathways. Phase I uses enzymes to convert toxic material into less harmful chemicals, while phase II adds substances to the toxin to make it water-soluble so that it can be easily excreted through watery fluids…talkin’ bout pee. For all this magic to happen, though, we need to provide our bodies with the right fuel. The least we can do, then, is make the liver’s job a little easier. That means getting ourselves the appropriate nutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids (protein) etc.
So with this information, we briefly revisit the bad news. Toxins aren’t exactly easy to avoid a lot of the time, and so many of us experience an overload. When this happens, these toxins start to stack up, get stored, and because they’re mostly fat-soluble, the body will keep them in fatty parts of the body where they can stay for much, much longer than any of us really want. These fatty parts of your body include, well, fat, but it also encompasses your brain, nervous system, and endocrine glands (hormones). That means that this buildup may result in TOXIN OVERLOAD.
