What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is a new paradigm of medical thinking that looks at patterns and systems of function rather than organ-based single disease diagnosis.
Functional Medicine addresses the whole person, getting to the root causes that influence your experience of health and disease. It doesn’t just look at an isolated set of symptoms.
Functional medicine involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex, chronic disease.

Functional Medicine or as we like to call it, “root cause medicine,” is a true partnership with your Doctor. Instead of pharmaceutical band aids given when you get sick or have symptoms, the functional medicine approach is a holistic, whole body approach. Functional Medicine Practitioners use comprehensive assessments and testing to discover why you are not feeling well. The focus is on treating the underlying imbalances in the body and giving it what it needs to heal and prevent disease for a healthy future.
Functional Medicine is a new paradigm of medical thinking that looks at patterns and systems of function rather than organ-based single disease diagnosis. It involves understanding the origins, prevention and treatment of complex, chronic disease to get to the root causes that influence your experience of health and disease. It doesn’t just look at an isolated set of symptoms.Functional Medicine promotes health as a positive vitality, beyond just the absence of disease.
By listening to the patient and learning his or her story, the Functional Medicine practitioner brings the patient into the discovery process and tailors treatments that address the individual’s unique needs. Practitioners consider the complex web of interactions in the patient’s history, physiology, and lifestyle that can lead to illness. The unique genetic makeup of each patient is considered, along with both internal (mind, body and spirit) and external (physical and social environment) factors that affect total functioning and have a direct influence on the rise of chronic disease, such as environmental exposure to toxins.
One of the biggest highlights of Functional Medicine, is the amount of time Providers spend with their patients. Most appointments are usually at least 1 hour long giving them the opportunity to trulylisten to you, and get to know you as a person, without ever feeling rushed. Listening to their patient’s history and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health, chronic disease and the daily quality of life.
Functional Medicine comprehensive diagnostic testing is important to mention. The testing is the basis of functional medicine’s ability to uncover the root of why someone does not feel well or to prevent a disease before it develops in the first place. You don’t know what you don’t know and these tests are very beneficial to identify what is going on and create treatment plans for you to feel better. Testing includes genetic testing, food allergy testing, hormone testing, toxins and mold testing, nutritional testing etc. With this information a practitioner can treat the underlying causes of disease instead of merely a patients symptoms with medications.
Our society is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of people who suffer from complex, chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cancer, mental illness, and autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis. The system of medicine now practiced by most physicians is oriented toward acute care, focusing on diagnosing and treating trauma or illness that is of short duration and in need of urgent care, such as appendicitis or a broken leg. Physicians apply specific, prescribed treatments—such as drugs or surgery—that are intended to treat the immediate problem or symptom.
The focus with functional medicine is much less on prescription medications for treatment options and much more on nutrition, exercise, stress management techniques, detoxification programs and supplement protocols. Functional Medicine believes “food is medicine” and healing is possible when you nourish the body with what it needs. Every “body” is different and it’s important for treatment plans to be tailored to a patients unique needs.
An example of a patient’s journey with Functional Medicine is our patient Libby. Libby is 64 years old and came to our practice with fibromyalgia, brain fog, intense joint pain, severe fatigue, and very overweight. We did our assessments and testing and found she had a candida overgrowth, a yeast overgrowth that was a big culprit to her symptoms and inflammation in the gut that we call “leaky gut.” After treating the candida, healing her gut and putting her on a diet for 4 months, she lost over 30lbs and is now pain free with more energy she ever imagined she could have at her age. She is also off of some of her medications and starting an exercise program that she thought she could never do again.
Overall, Functional Medicine is the key to longevity and enhancing the quality and performance of your life. If you’re sick of getting prescriptions for every symptom you have and not getting answers on why you don’t feel great, Functional Medicine is the way to assess your health and get those answers.
